Questions to Ask an Artist Before Buying Their Work
Use a focused set of questions to understand an artwork's medium, dimensions, condition, authorship and transaction arrangements without inventing certainty.
Start with the exact artwork
Confirm the stated title, date, medium, support, dimensions and whether the work is unique or part of an edition. Ask the artist to clarify any terms you do not understand.
Keep the artwork and listing reference with the conversation so details are not transferred accidentally from another work.
Ask about materials and making
Invite a factual description of materials, surface treatments and construction that may affect display or care.
Do not ask the artist to provide conservation guarantees outside their knowledge. Seek a qualified conservator for consequential material or condition questions.
Clarify condition and recent changes
Ask about visible damage, restoration, repairs or alterations, and request current images appropriate to the work.
Photographs and descriptions help, but they do not prove complete condition, authenticity or legal title.
Discuss authorship and documentation
Ask what signature, certificate, invoice or other documentation will accompany the work, and what each document actually states.
Do not treat a certificate or artist conversation as an automatic guarantee of provenance, future value or investment return.
Confirm display and care guidance
Ask how the work is currently displayed or stored and whether the artist has medium-specific handling recommendations.
Check framing, hanging and environmental decisions with suitable professionals where the scale, fragility or value warrants it.
Separate the artwork from delivery terms
Confirm current price, payment, collection or delivery, packaging, returns and responsibility for costs before committing. Delivery charges are separate on Artistry Avenue, and arrangements must be checked for the individual work.
Artists currently join and list free, with a 10% artwork-only commission; verify the latest marketplace terms and checkout availability before relying on them.
