How Artists Can Photograph Artwork Scale Without Misleading Buyers
Create honest scale photographs for online art listings using measured dimensions, neutral reference points and clear labels without implying that a mock-up is the real installation.
Measure the artwork first
Record height, width and depth with units, and state whether the measurements include the frame. Use the actual artwork rather than copying a related listing.
A scale photograph supports dimensions but never replaces them.
Choose a neutral reference
Photograph the work beside a clearly described, stable reference or in a real room whose context is not distorted. Keep the camera level and avoid extreme wide-angle views.
Do not use an object of ambiguous size as the only scale cue.
Show the actual artwork and presentation
Make clear whether the image shows the original work, its frame, a temporary display or a digital room mock-up. Label visualisations prominently.
A digital mock-up must not imply that the work has been installed in that room or that the furniture is included.
Control perspective and cropping
Photograph the artwork straight-on as well as in context. Keep enough surrounding wall or furniture visible for the scale image to be meaningful.
Do not stretch, compress or crop the scene in a way that changes the apparent proportions of the artwork.
Add close views for information, not scale
Use separate detail photographs for surface, signature, edges, frame and condition. Explain which images are close-ups so buyers do not mistake them for the whole work.
Maintain consistent colour handling and avoid filters that materially alter the work.
Connect images to accurate listing details
Keep the scale image, dimensions, presentation notes and inventory reference together. Update the listing if the frame or presentation changes.
Artists currently join and list without a fee; the artwork-only commission is 10% and delivery charges are separate. Confirm current terms and delivery arrangements before a transaction; do not assume shipping checkout is fully operational without rechecking.
