How to Check Artwork Size Against Your Wall Before Buying
Compare artwork dimensions, framing, furniture and viewing distance with a simple scale mock-up before buying original art.
Read the dimensions carefully
Check whether the listing dimensions describe the image, full artwork, frame or an object’s maximum size. Record height, width, depth and units. Ask for clarification if orientation or framing is unclear.
A photograph rarely provides a reliable scale reference. Room mock-ups can be useful when accurately labelled, but should not be treated as measured proof of how a piece will fit.
Measure the usable wall area
Record the space around doors, switches, shelving, radiators and furniture. Consider how the wall is viewed from the room entrance and everyday seating, not only from directly in front.
Avoid assuming the full wall width is available. Door movement, access and existing fittings can reduce the practical display area. Final fixing suitability is a separate question for the responsible professional.
Make a full-size paper outline
Use paper or another suitable temporary material to mark the proposed outer dimensions, including the frame. Place it with a wall-safe method appropriate to the surface and step back from several normal viewpoints.
Try more than one position without turning a general aesthetic preference into a rigid rule. The purpose is to understand scale and balance in your actual room, not meet a universal percentage formula.
Compare with furniture and viewing distance
Check the outline with the real sofa, table or bed in position. A work can feel different when furniture moves or when viewed across a narrow room. Take a simple photograph to compare positions later.
Leave the mock-up in place long enough to notice daily use. If several people share the room, include their sightlines and preferences before deciding.
Account for depth, weight and environment
Ask for the framed weight, mounting information and any care requirements. Deep frames and three-dimensional work project into the space and may need a different display arrangement.
Do not infer that an existing hook or wall can support the artwork. Appropriate fixing, surface condition, light, heat and moisture need review for the actual piece and location. Seek qualified help where necessary.
Return to the artwork record
Confirm the dimensions and included frame again before committing, and save the description with your purchase records. Screen colour and digital staging do not replace accurate information about the physical piece.

Frequently asked questions
Is there one correct artwork-to-wall ratio? No; assess the room and your preferences. Should the frame be included in the mock-up? Yes, if it is part of the intended display. Does a paper outline confirm safe hanging? No; weight and fixing suitability still require verification.
